Since its founding in 1877, the Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS) has supported the development of the public transport network defined by the local authority. Every day, its teams work to meet new challenges in the service of mobility.
Its history reflects a pioneering spirit: in 1912, CTS became the first semi-public company in France; in 1928, it introduced the first urban buses; in 1994, it marked the return of the modern tram; and in 2017, it inaugurated France’s first cross-border tramway to Kehl, strengthening its role in European cooperation and sustainable mobility.
Since 2019, CTS has been a local public company majority-owned by the Eurométropole de Strasbourg (79.95%), alongside the Grand Est Region (20%) and the City of Kehl (0.05%). This structure promotes synergies and ensures transparent governance. Linked to the Eurométropole since 1 January 2021 through a ten-year concession contract, CTS contributes to the transport policy of the 33 municipalities in the area. Its board of directors reflects this shared governance, bringing together representatives of the local authorities and employees.
Today, CTS fulfils two complementary missions: operating the public transport network to make everyday travel easier, and designing, building and financing the necessary infrastructure, from tracks to park-and-ride facilities. With around 140 million trips per year and a 100% clean fleet, it embodies a modern, citizen-friendly and responsible public service, fully committed to the ecological transition and building sustainable mobility for tomorrow.
